Cherries took the lead inside ten minutes through Danny Hollands. Cooper's delivery was knocked on by Vokes and Hollands' low effort squeezed past Ince to the far side of goal via a deflection.

Sam Vokes had a couple of early half chances, although was thwarted by the Walsall defence. Similarly at the other end, Forde had little early work thanks to a couple of good blocks by Pearce and Cooper.

A ring of sarcastic applause greeted Walsall's first shot on target; a tame curling effort from Mooney held easily by Forde. Lee Holmes faired better on twenty-six minutes with a low drive that Forde had to keep his eye on.

Walsall equalised in the thirty-third minute. Former Cherries loanee Kevin Betsy ran through the middle and beat the offside trap to latch onto the through ball. He then had time and space to slot past Forde.

Undeterred by the setback Cherries responded in the best possible way. Jo Kuffour was given too much room in the penalty area and the striker applied a finish to the standard Cherries fans are becoming accustomed. It was Kuffour's fifth goal in his last five outings. Anderton was instrumental in the build up playing a neat one-two with Vokes before assisting Kuffour.

Darren Anderton then had a rasping effort saved by Clayton Ince thanks to a great tackle from Danny Hollands to break up a Walsall counter attack. Kuffour netted the rebound, but was offside.

Half time: Walsall 1-2 AFC Bournemouth

Cherries started the second half much the stronger side and forced a couple of early corners. Clayton Ince nearly pulled a clanger when Pitman lashed in a low effort, but the keeper gathered up his initial spill.

Walsall rallied however and with the introduction of Nicholls, began to exert some pressure onto the Bournemouth goal.

Cherries were then denied a certain penalty after Sam Vokes freed himself from his marker in the area. Ince made a clumsy and clearly caught Vokes, but the referee waved away spot kick protests.

A couple of minutes later Cherries were awarded a penalty. Kuffour's tenacity kept Cherries in the hunt as Walsall couldn't clear and a shirt pull by Smith did the damage. Pitman stepped up confidently and although Ince got a touch the ball rebounded into the roof of the net.
