A quick pass from Darren Anderton started the first move of the match with less than two minutes played. Cummings carried the ball forward down the left flank under pressure and when Foley picked up his cross was met by a downward header from Hayter saved by Basso.
A minute later another slick move ended when Purches' cross swayed in the air and landed on top of the bar with Basso beaten. City's first attack came when Scott Brown dispossessed Cooper, but Anderton's quick thinking saw the shot and blocked it to concede a corner.
Gareth Stewart had to deal with a couple of dangerous looking crosses from the City left before Hayter fired a snap shot wide after twenty minutes. Lee Johnson then drilled a shto through a crowd of players, but Stewart saw it all the way and was able to make the save.
Nine minutes before the break Cherries won a free kick when the referee brought back an advantage not gained. To the right of centre just outside the box Darren Anderton fired in a thunderbolt, but straight at Basso who managed to get his weight behind the ball and save it.
Half time: AFC Bournemouth 0-0 Bristol City
Six minutes into the second half Bristol City were inches away from breaking the deadlock. Scott Brown pulled the trigger from twenty-five yards, beat Stewart and smacked the inside of the post.
The move lifted the tempo of the game and ignited both sets of fans and forced Cherries onto the attack. Anderton was becoming more involved and supplying some excellent crosses into the Bristol City penalty area.
Scott Murray had a foray into the Cherries penalty area with twenty-five minutes to play, but his right footed effort flew wide of Stewart's left hand post.
Four minutes later City took the lead. Johnson battled for the ball by the corner flag on the left hand side. He held possession and provided a cross for Jevons whose downward header had enough direction to beat Gareth Stewart and give City the lead.
Danny Hollands and Leon Best came on for Bournemouth and Hollands had a chance on the end of a swift Cherries counter attack. He couldn't quite connect when the ball fell his way and watched as his shot rolled safely wide. Two minutes later a second opportunity followed the same fate.
With three minutes remaining Shaun Cooper put an excellent ball into the area. Leon Best ran onto it and beat the keeper with a brave challenge, but he found himself at a wide angle and shot into the side netting.
