- Wade 'sets the standard'
The Walsall frontline didn't need too many chances or much of the ball to break into a two goal lead against the run of play. Manager Sean O'Driscoll said, "They've had one shot in the first half from Eddie's mistake. They've put one ball in the box and scored from it."
"At half time we're 1-0 down and next time they've put the ball in the box they've scored again. We had to throw caution to the wind after that and we had chance after chance."
"It's great for the spectators, but it's going to be a long hard season if we go 2-0 behind every game before we can get back into the game. It was an entertaining game for the fans so hopefully they keep coming to support the team."
A formation change from Saturday saw a back three involving Howe, Maher and Broadhurst. Sean explained, "What do you do with Paul Merson? He's too good a player."
"He's going to be a major threat in this league and perhaps it's no coincidence that we scored two goals when he went off. He doesn't do much defensively, but he's too clever and too intelligent not to do your homework on."
Man of the match Wade Elliott scored a seventy-fouth minute equaliser to cap off a wonderful performance and Sean added, "Wade has been great in pre-season and he's set the standard now. He was terrific and it's now up to the forwards to make use of the service he provides."
"Eddie was nervous beforehand and was conscious he might not have lasted the ninety. He wants to do well for himself and the team and coped really well especially when they brought on a couple of quicker players towards the end."
