A game of two halves, but three points nonetheless

Cherries boss Sean O'Driscoll spoke after the 1-0 win against Bristol Rovers and described the different tactics adopted in both halves against Ray Graydon's men. Only the woodwork and the goalkeeping heroics of Scott Howie kept the visitors in the game during the first half and O'Driscoll explained how the second was just about winning the game; which the team went on to do 'tremendously.'
O'Driscoll said, "I think that's our best result of the season so far without necessarily being our best performance. It was the best result in the current circumstances and after having been deservedly drubbed by Torquay on Tuesday so they've bounced back well. We had a few other problems with injuries, but everyone has come through today."
"We could have wrapped this game up in the first twenty minutes and that was always a worry with the conditions. I said at half time that they'd shown everyone what a good side they were and the second half was about winning the game and I thought they were tremendous in going about that."
"We spoke before the Torquay game that by human nature, complacency would set in sooner or later and they were really up for it today after that result. Since then we've only really trained on the Thursday and the Friday and the mood was to win the game. It would be nice to have scored a few more goals, but we'll settle for the three points."
Neil Young had arguably his best game since returning from a knee injury last February and he won the first half man of the match text vote by scoring double his nearest rival. O'Driscoll said, "He was unfortunate to be sacrificed in the game against Torquay and it wasn't because of how he was playing. He's had a little rest, which always helps with the injury he has and it was a gamble playing Fletch with the number of games he's had since coming back. With Derek Holmes back the shape didn't change too much when Fletch went off and that enabled him to get the rest he needed."
"Steve has an injury that we have to be careful with and in an ideal world, we wouldn't have started him today, but we've got a week without a game now so we thought we'd be able to get an hour out of him and you could see he was tired when he came off."
A third clean sheet in four matches for Bournemouth coincided with a third appearance in central defence for Carl Fletcher in the last four games. He stepped into the midfield for the Torquay match and after reverting him to central defence today, O'Driscoll said, "I think he's enjoyed playing there and he's come through the youth with Karl Broadhurst so that makes for a good partnership between them."
"At the end of the day, they are the only two fit centre-backs we've got, but the more strings to his bow Carl has, the better player he will be and the better he would be for any club. I think I could play him anywhere at the moment and I know he'd give his all and give a cultured performance. Playing him at the back also gives us that little more control there to make us play as he's the one able to find the spaces when passing the ball."
