O'Driscoll, "He deserved his ninety minutes"
Posted on: Wed 17 Nov 2004
Sean O'Driscoll paid special praise to Alan Connell after a resounding 3-1 victory against Rushden and Diamonds last night. He was particularly pleased with his non-stop running and also singled out Danny Thomas and Wade Elliott for the work rate put into the first home victory of the season.
The Cherries have now had three home games in the past week and O'Driscoll was happy with how they've performed through this tough spell of games. He said, "They've performed three times now in eight days, which is difficult for any team, let alone a third division team with young players."
"This was arguably the hardest game from the three we've just played and I'm delighted. To perform like they did was terrific and the crowd were a different class. They've had two disappointments as well as everybody else and they were really up for it today. That had an effect on the players and they deserve a past on the back as well."
Rushden did have a spell of pressure at the start of the second half, but O'Driscoll talked through the tactics used to combat their strengths. He said, "Neil Moss hardly had a save to make so I don't think there was that much pressure. We came in at half time and knew they were going to get a talking to at half time and come at us, especially being one of the best sides going forward."
"We've worked on defending as a team and trying to break as quick as we can. We felt that's where they would be most vulnerable and it worked a treat. Wade Elliott and Danny Thomas have put in a great shift tonight and I know how hard it is to play there having done so myself and they were a different class; defensively too, which isn't their forte."
Alan Connell grabbed a deserved goal five minutes from the end and O'Driscoll praised the improvements the young striker has made since his debut. He said, "I looked at Alan Connell and I was poised to bring James Hayter on, but he was still full of running and I think it was a good game for him to stay on."
"He has got stronger and is high on confidence and I didn't need to take him off. Every time we put balls in the channel he was still chasing them and at the end of the day I think he's more pleased with his ninety minutes than the goal."
