O'Driscoll, "We've got to concentrate on Bury now"
Posted on: Wed 17 Nov 2004
Sean O'Driscoll sent his team out to win that cup game and a couple of penalties along with a goal against Browning are what kept Brentford in it. Bournemouth were the better side and O'Driscoll took heart from that, but proclaimed the game is now behind everyone. He said it's now gone and that the Bury match is the most important thing at the moment; with or without a keeper intact!
After the penalty defeat, Sean O'Driscoll quickly turned his mind back to the league and stated that now Brentford was over, there is no point dwelling on it. O'Driscoll said, "To be fair I'm not really bothered now. We've got to concentrate on Bury now. I said to the players it's gone and we can't do anything about it now, but Bury's the most important thing in our minds."
This doesn't mean the side didn't go out to win though. There was some fabulous football played at times and Brentford were only in the game thanks to two penalties and one of many optimistic shots in an attempt to beat Marcus Browning. O'Driscoll added, "We always set out to try and win football matches and tonight was no different. Whether it's Man United or Brentford we're not really concerned who it is."
"I've taken a lot of heart out of the performances throughout the whole season. Where we are you've got to be a bit more pragmatic. I thought second half against Cambridge was the best we've played this season and you've got to remember that Brentford are sitting at the top of the second division, unbeaten and the secret to their success is that they've worked harder than the other clubs they've played although I didn't think that was the case tonight."
Neither Tardif nor Ashdown are certain of playing on Saturday and this yet again leaves the Cherries without a goalkeeper. O'Driscoll said about the injury to Tardif, "Chris had a bang in the face and his eye swelled so that he couldn't see out of it. Maybe we took him off a bit too quick, but the physio said there was no way he could continue. I don't know at this stage whether he'll be available for Saturday or not."
The back four protected Browning very well, but O'Driscoll said, "We shouldn't have to have done that. The club will say it's important to get a cup run because of the finances and then we have to go in with one goalkeeper and that's down to finance. Unless someone gives me some money to pay them then I can't bring anybody in, plus we're embargoed at the moment."
The next keeper at the club is young Scrivens from the youth team. He made a brief show in the pre-season friendlies, but O'Driscoll would rather not have to rely on throwing the teenager into the fray. He said, "Jamie comes back on Thursday with a view to being involved on Saturday, but we think he's unlikely to be ready. Jamie thinks he might be so we'll have to wait and see. I might have to bring him [Scrivens] in because if we need another keeper we'll first have to get special dispensation to bring another keeper in and then we've got to be able to afford his wages."
