Howe: The important second goal eluded us

Posted: Sat 23 Jan 2016

Eddie Howe believes his side had the better of the play against Sunderland, but were unable to find an important second goal.

Benik Afobe headed the Cherries ahead after 13 minutes, before Patrick van Aanholt then levelled just before the break.

"I think we dominated the early stages of the game," said Howe.

"We were in total control, but we lost that grip slightly as the game went on.

"The important second goal eluded us when we had large periods of possession in dangerous areas, so we are disappointed not to win.

"It was a good point but we wanted more, and I feel our performance deserved more."

The result puts AFC Bournemouth six points clear of Sunderland, and Howe was happy to continue his side's good run of form.

"There are positives to take," he continued.

"We have only lost two games in eleven, so that's a very good statistic for us. Especially when you look at the games we have had.

"To come through those games with points is important and it's what we'll have to continue to do throughout the season."
