Howe has rotated his side in the cup competitions and has admitted it will be no different against the League Two outfit at Fratton Park.
The manager is pleased to see the players he is looking to bring into the side eager to play and believes that is a testament to the character in the squad.
"It will be a tough game for us," Howe explained.
"I watched Portsmouth’s last game against Ipswich in the cup and they were very good and full value for their win.
"Paul Cook is doing an excellent job and they have every chance of going up from League Two.
"Fratton Park is known for its atmosphere, the pitch is quite close to the stands and the crowd are involved in games there, so mentality is the key thing from our perspective.
"I don't think it will be same team as it was against Birmingham, there will be slight changes but that shows the strength of our squad.
"A lot of players are desperate to play and prove themselves, they want to give me a nudge on getting them in the team. It will be interesting to see how players look at this stage in the season and they’re all champing at the bit, which is credit to them."
Despite the impending changes to his selection, Howe once again emphasised that the club are taking the Emirates FA Cup seriously and are eager to continue progressing in the competition.
"It's a new experience for us coming into the third round and at that stage, a couple of wins and you're in the latter stages of the competition,” he continued.
"We take it very seriously, we want to progress and the magic is there if you want it to be.
"It does have a different feel about it now, but it's still a huge competition in English football."
