Howe: I'm not all doom and gloom, we were really pleased until we conceded the first goal

AFC Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth

The Cherries equalled United for large periods of the first-half but goals from Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were enough to give United the win - despite a lovely consolation strike from Adam Smith.

Howe reflected on the crucial first goal which he believed changed the encounter as his side were more than a match for Jose Mourinho’s men up until that point.

"I thought we gave as good as we got in the early stages of the game," Howe told BBC Radio Solent.

"I think we were really pleased until we conceded the first goal, it’s tough to give any team a goal headstart, let alone Manchester United.

"It was an unlucky moment as was the second goal really. We had defended well and minimised their threat around the box but we didn’t really build any pressure around their goal and that’s something for us to look at.

"We were trying to be strong enough to stay in the game but we have to take this game in insolation. I’m not all doom and gloom, it’s important we don’t go negative and believe we’ll come back from this."

Howe handed debuts to Jordon Ibe and Lewis Cook – with Cook making his first ever Premier League appearance.

The manager revealed he had no hesitation in playing the young pair against United and was pleased with their performances.

"I though both Lewis Cook and Jordon Ibe did well," Howe continued.

"It’s very difficult to come into this team quickly, but they showed glimpses of what they’re going to be about.

"Lewis was never daunted and I had no issues in playing him today, he stepped up superbly."
