He will bring with him to the Goldsands Stadium a huge amount of experience, including Premier league and international football.
He will return to the club as level headed as always and knows that he must manage his way back to match fitness in a controlled manner.
“It’s of a paramount importance that I develop base fitness, which is crucial,” said the midfielder. “I have to get my head down and work hard for the foreseeable future and stay clear of injuries. I’m sure there will be little niggles, which will be a nuisance.
“It’s now a case of getting the balance right and maintaining the levels. It is difficult to put a time on it, I will go through everything with the management and the fitness coach progressively and integrate that in to getting back to playing football.
It’s going to take time and more importantly hard work. I have started already and I will continue to do that.”
When Richard is fit, he will then face another huge challenge and that’s to get in to the squad where competition for places is fierce. He feels that it’s his experience that will help to get him there and more importantly, can keep him there.
“It’s a really good squad, a very talented squad and it’s exciting to be here and be part of it. My aim is to bring something to the table. I have been out of the game for a while, but the attributes that I have as a player hopefully are still there!
I’ve never been blessed with particularly good pace, and that’s one of the first things that tends to go as you get older. In that respect, the experience I have had in the game can enable me to help this talented squad that has been assembled. If I can do that I will be delighted.”
Richard will return to Bournemouth a decade after leaving as a player, but it’s a club that he has always retained close ties with.
“It’s a very tight knit and family orientated club and when you have been a part of it for any length of time, it stays with you. I had the most enjoyable times in football in my career at Bournemouth. I never left the area and always lived here and always had friends who played for the club.
“When players say that they have a club that they always look out for their results, it really has been Bournemouth for me since I left because I have such fantastic memories of the club. I’ve always stayed in touch and kept up to date with what is going on at AFC Bournemouth.
“It’s sensational what has gone on here. In a relatively short period of time, this club has gone to a new level, which is very impressive. The training ground really looks the part and that shows that the club is going in the right direction and I’m just pleased that I'm going to be a part of it.”
