Callum Wilson: Today just goes to show how far we’ve come as a team and there’s still room for improvement and to grow

Callum Wilson believes that the display against Arsenal is a good measurements that the side have made over the past year.

The striker netted his fourth of the season as AFC Bournemouth lost 3-1 to Arsene Wenger’s Gunners, making him the club’s highest ever Premier League goalscorer with nine goals in total in the competition.

Despite the loss, Wilson was adamant that there is plenty the Cherries can take from the game.

He said: "Unfortunately, we didn’t get the result we wanted but I think there’s a lot of positives we can take out of today.

"We had chances in the game, definitely. Smithy in the first half, Benik’s chance and Brad’s chance so I think the scoreline doesn’t really reflect how we played.

"I think a lot of teams could come here and just let Arsenal have the ball and sit off. We came here, pressed them high up the pitch, tried to make it uncomfortable for them and I think for 45 minutes we did that.

"We went toe to toe with a great Arsenal team and we just came here trying to play the way that we play really, a hard pressing game, and it nearly paid off but we’re learning and we’re growing as a team. I think it shows how much we have improved.

"We’ve got great depth in the squad so whoever steps in you always know that they’re going to be able to do a job. There’s positives and it’s good competition for the team."

Wilson returned from his long term knee injury at the back end of last season and is back amongst the goals and feeling sharp ahead of the Christmas period.

The 24-year-old continued: "It was a nice touch [to score]. My family were in the stands so it was a proud moment for myself.

"I feel normal now. I don’t even think about my knee really so I’m just trying to score as many goals as I can, work hard for the team and get as many points on the board as we can.

"Today just goes to show how far we’ve come as a team and there’s still room for improvement and to grow."
