Dan Gosling’s first goal at the Goldsands Stadium set AFC Bournemouth on their way to a 3-0 Capital One Cup second round win over Northampton Town.
Gosling netted in the 21st minute to add to the goal he scored in the previous round against Exeter City.
Brett Pitman then scored a second in the opening half an hour to put daylight between the Cherries and their League Two opponents.
Substitute Callum Wilson made sure of the win, heading in the rebound from Gosling’s powerful drive ten minutes from time.
The home crowd left the ground dreaming of a high-profile tie against the likes of Manchester City or Liverpool, who enter the League Cup in the next stage.
Having been forced to wait an hour to open the scoring in the previous round, the Cherries were intent on making a first start.
Marc Pugh put in a few early dangerous crosses before Eunan O’Kane rattled the bar from the edge of the area.
Meanwhile, the Cobblers had chances of their own in the opening stages, with skipper Lee Collins heading just wide from a corner.
But the Cherries were soon piling on the pressure again as Pugh and home debutant Baily Cargill tried their luck as the hosts dominated.
The breakthrough finally came in the 21st minute as Gosling arrived late in the box and calmly converted Adam Smith’s pull back.
It was two less than ten minutes later as Pitman made the most of a defensive mix up and rounded the goalkeeper for his second goal in as many appearances.
Chances were few and far between in the second half, although Tokelo Rantie tested Jordan Archer at the near post.
The South African was replaced by Wilson shortly afterwards and he almost found a third, seeing his close range finish pushed away and the follow up guided over the bar by Pitman.
But Wilson did get his goal in the closing stages as he followed up on Gosling’s effort and headed beyond the ‘keeper in front of the Steve Fletcher Stand.
