AFC Bournemouth 4-0 Blackpool

A first half hat-trick from Brett Pitman helped AFC Bournemouth beat Blackpool 4-0 to finish the day as Sky Bet Championship league leaders.

The Cherries had briefly been knocked off top spot following Middlesbrough’s 4-1 win over Ipswich Town in the early kick-off.

But Pitman’s treble, including his 100th goal for the club, secured another important three points for Eddie Howe’s team.

The in-form striker’s opener, a low effort from the edge of the area, was followed by a close range header and a powerful shot from 20 yards out.

Callum Wilson then added a fourth from the penalty spot to take his total for the season to 19 in all competitions.

With Harry Arter starting a one-match suspension for improper conduct, Shaun MacDonald returned to the starting line-up in the one change to the side that won at Fulham.

Meanwhile, Ryan Fraser and Eunan O’Kane were added to the bench in place of Arter and Yann Kermorgant, who missed out through illness.

The Cherries went in search of an early goal and got it in the tenth minute as Pitman kept up his good form with another fine solo goal.

The striker carried the ball to the edge of the area and wrong footed goalkeeper Elliott Parish with a left footed finish.

The home side were in complete control, but their next clear cut chance came some 20 minutes later as Tommy Elphick went up for a corner and headed a inswinging delivery off target.

All of a sudden, Pitman put the Cherries out of sight with two goals in the space of three minutes just before the break.

Pitman was well-placed to head home at the back post from Matt Ritchie’s deflected shot and then drove a low shot past Parish having been set-up by Marc Pugh.

Pugh played a pivotal role in the fourth as he was brought down in the box before Wilson stepped up to convert from 12 yards out.

With the chance to improve what could be a crucial goal difference, Pitman fired a volley over and Andrew Surman curled a shot wide.

Substitutes Adam Smith, Junior Stanislas and Tokelo Rantie featured in a 3-4-2-1 formation for the closing stages, with Simon Francis wearing the captain's armband.
