Cherries suffer defeat at Leicester

The Cherries were denied a point at the King Power Stadium after Jamie Vardy netted a second half winner to give Leicester City a 2-1 victory.

David Nugent opened the scoring after 18 minutes, only for Marc Pugh to equalise with a stunning strike shortly before half-time.

But the Cherries’ afternoon took a turn for a worse when Vardy put the Foxes back in front and Elliott Ward was sent off in the space of two minutes.

Ward had been shown a yellow card early on in the first half and was dismissed in the 65th minute for bringing down Danny Drinkwater.

Leicester created most of the early pressure and Vardy inadvertently blocked a goal bound header from team-mate Wes Morgan inside the opening ten minutes.

But the Cherries began to settle and Lewis Grabban went close to opening the scoring on a couple of occasions. First, he saw his shot from the edge of the area deflected past the post and then guided a half volley off target.

However, it was the Foxes who took the lead. Nugent created some space inside the penalty area and found the back of the net with a tidy finish.

The goal put the hosts in the ascendency and they went on control large periods of the first half, only for Pugh to equalise in spectacular fashion.

The winger collected the ball on the edge of the area, took a touch and drove his effort past Kasper Schmeichel to score his second goal in as many games.

The second half was, again, an even affair with Ryan Allsop making a good reaction save to deny Anthony Knockaert, while Grabban saw his long range strike stopped by a brave block.

The Foxes, however, had created more clear cut chances and once again took the lead, this time through Vardy as he rounded Allsop and tapped into an empty net.

Just minutes later the Cherries went down to ten men as Ward was shown a red card for a second bookable offence.

But Eddie Howe was bold in his changes, bringing on Wes Thomas for the final ten minutes and he played in Tokelo Rantie, who fired just over from a narrow angle.

However, it was to no avail as the hosts made the man advantage pay and the Cherries dropped down to 11th in the table.
